Denfaminicogamer has published a roundtable with six developers who make Metroidvania games: ArtPlay’s Koji Igarashi, Daichi Saito of Why So Serious, the Shadow Labyrinth team from Bandai Namco Entertainment and Bandai Namco Studios, and Tomoaki Fukui of Engines.
Igarashi explains that he arrived at exploration-driven action because he was never strong at action games himself and wanted to make games that people who call themselves bad at action can see through to the end, with RPG elements such as levelling and menu healing closing the skill gap. The developers also debate whether tempo, save-point spacing or immersion defines the genre, and how today’s players feel about death penalties.
